Beyond Color began after one of my journeys through Africa. While working on the photographs, I found myself increasingly drawn to black and white. By removing color, the images seemed to become quieter, yet more powerful. Expressions, shapes, textures, light and shadow moved to the foreground. What remained was the essence of the moment.
For me, Beyond Color is more than a photographic series. It is my first major project and my first book as a wildlife photographer. It reflects my connection to the African wilderness, a connection that began when I first visited the African bush at the age of nine. Since then, Africa has never felt like just another destination. The South African bush, in particular, gives me a feeling of belonging and of coming home.
The photographs in this collection were created over several years across Southern and Eastern Africa, including the Kruger National Park, Greater Kruger, Makuleke, the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. They reveal the African wilderness in all its rawness, beauty and emotional depth.
The series includes a wide variety of animals and landscapes. Big cats naturally hold a special place within my work, especially the leopard, but Beyond Color is not dedicated to one species alone. It is about the wilderness as a whole and the relationships, behaviours and quiet moments that exist within it.
My photography is shaped by patience, composition and an understanding of animal behaviour. I often allow the surrounding landscape to become an essential part of the image. Sometimes the animal is immediately visible. Sometimes it must first be discovered, just as it would be on safari. This invites the viewer to pause, observe and become part of the scene.
Whenever possible, I work without disturbing the animal or influencing its natural behaviour. Respect for wildlife lies at the heart of everything I do. Through these photographs, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for nature and encourage awareness of conservation, habitat loss and our responsibility towards the wild places that remain.
Beyond Color currently exists as a fine art photography book, a wall calendar, a desk calendar and a collection of premium aluminium prints. It is created for collectors, photography enthusiasts and everyone who feels a connection to Africa and its wildlife.
The project is not finished. I do not believe it ever truly will be. As long as I return to Africa, Beyond Color will continue to grow, one encounter, one landscape and one story at a time.
